We're coming up on the first anniversary of the debut of THE DARK ROOM. A project that’s truly horrifying, weird, creepy, beautiful and sometimes a little funny. It’s impossible to to pin down exactly what it is, and how we did it because we took turns passing the wheel, and sometime it was in the hands of ghosts. It could only have been published at Image Comics.
It doesn’t read like Scott Bouncristiano’s first comic, but against all reason…that is a true statement. The storytelling, acting, draftsmanship and imagination are all top notch. Tamra Bonvillain, Joe Sabino and Elliott Gray rounded out my collaborators on the book. Everyone put their heart into this one, and it still brings me joy a year in to have helped this one into the world.
If you’d like to read the first dozen pages for free head this way. Our world is a shitty place and there are too many mean folks, but here’s some great news. We’ve made tremendous progress on Volume Two.
It’s even more killer and wonderfully weird than our first story. All your favorites are back and we’re introducing new characters and wrinkles our canvas. Beginnings and endings of stories tend to take a little bit more time to ease into, and the second volume is more self-assured and flowing fast. We know and love the world and are shining light into the darkness and capturing what we see. We know we have a winner because it’s so much fun to cook up.
We have another banger of a cover that’s inked, colored and ready to drop but we’re going to hold that amazing image back for another day. However, we do have a couple of killer inked pages from Scott that don’t spoil our story.
Can’t wait for Tamra to get her hands on them, and for you all to get your hands on our second volume. There isn’t a crazy notion we’ve discarded, and we haven’t forgotten to break your heart. Watch this space for more on that soon.
In the meantime, if you’re one of the poor souls that hasn’t checked out or comic yet, a limited number of signed copies of volume one are available at Collector’s Paradise in North Hollywood.
They do mail-order. Check em out here. They have them on sale for the same price as the drones at Globochem, and they come with a fancy certificate of authenticity for free.
Thanks for supporting creator-owned comics and your local comic shops.
This week: more on the comic from David O’Sullivan and yours truly that will be debuting on Substack, and a look forward into the summer at Marvel with Uncanny Avengers, Iron Man and of course, X-Men.
All the best,
GD
Hey Gerry, I finally grabbed The Dark Room off the shelf and read it in a sitting. Fantastic! I adore the narrative voice. Looking forward to more!
Absolutely loved volume 1. Can’t wait for volume 2. I hurried up and scrolled through the preview pages in the post because I don’t want any teasers or spoilers. I just want to read and enjoy it cold.
