2024’s peaks and valleys continue to provide a hell of a rollercoaster ride. The lows have been low, but the highs have been deliriously wonderful. Marvel invited me to the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere at Lincoln Center in New York City and Ryan Reynolds made sure it was a night to remember.
I wrote about my appreciation of my fellow Deadpool creators before I got to the movie here…and I only appreciate my fraternity of creators more in the aftermath. If you didn’t read my previous post, give it a few moments of your time, lots of folks that I wanted to shout out that sometimes don’t get the love.
The movie is a hell of a lot of fun, and I think we knew that going in. The real treat is the heart in the film. Here’s what the streets were like ahead of the premiere:
The party that night was so much fun, a great chance to catch up with old friends, make new ones and celebrate this film existing.
Posehn caught Covid, so Phil Noto got to be my date for the evening and after the after party we ended it at our Sanctum on 51st with CB. As I previously wrote not long ago Deadpool has two creators, but the character has many more parents. Maybe we’re more like inappropriate Uncles of Deadpool. Speaking of…
It was a joy watching Ryan drive Deadpool like a rental. Has a performer embodied their character like this since…Christopher Reeves? For real. I had a voice for Wade in my head before Ryan came along and I can’t even remember what it sounded like. I’m sure being bitten by a radioactive sad clown had some downsides for Ryan, but it was a wonderful thing for us Deadpool fans.
Every film that gets made is a miracle.
Every film that gets made well is a miracle squared. The film not only advances the MCU story, but what a lovely eulogy for a couple of decades of Fox films.
It’s a fantastic, comic-infused joyride of mayhem and Ryan and Hugh are perfect as two wounded warriors covering up their boo-boos with all kinds of delightful violence and trash talk.
Deadpool & Wolverine is a triumph, a shot of adrenaline for theaters, and it puts the wind at the backs of the folks that make movies. IATSE & The Teamsters closing deals maybe the entire business picks up? That's how good it is and how much fun you’ll have.
It made me feel optimistic again.
If you haven’t seen it yet, what the fuck are you waiting for?
It’s the definitive Deadpool story…until they decide to try again.
